“You know what is funny? Last week I was in our factory break room, eating a sandwich that was way too dry, and scrolling through some industry reports on my phone. And I had one of those what the heck moments.

I’ve been around this HDD drill rod game for about 5 years. I have seen rigs come and go thread designs come and go and have broken more rods than I care to admit. But when I actually sat down and looked at the numbers for where this market is headed? I was amazed too.

So let me tell you what is really happening out there. Not in some fancy corporate language, but the way I would explain it to a buddy over a beer.

The Numbers That Made Me Double Take

Here’s the thing. The global HDD tools market reached a value of $2.1 billion in 2024. And just the drill rod part? This generated revenue of about USD 2.2 billion in that year.

Now, I know what you’re thinking – “Okay, cool, but what does that mean for me? That’s a good question.

The HDD drill rods market is projected to grow at a CAGR of approximately 9.6% throughout the forecast period ending in 2030 and attain a valuation of around USD 3.9 billion. And the wider HDD market? Depending on which report you believe (and believe me, I’ve read way too many of them) we’re looking at anywhere between USD 9.2 billion and over USD 16 billion by 2030.

I came across a report from Fortune Business Insights which mentioned that the global HDD market was worth USD 9.24 billion in 2025 and could reach up to USD 25.11 billion by 2034. That’s a CAGR of around 11.75%

Those numbers are not just big, they are “we got to pay attention” big.

So what’s actually driving all this growth?

I get asked this all the time by customers. Why should I care about market trends? I just need some rods that won’t break.”

And frankly? Fair enough. But this is why this stuff is important to you.

First up, the 5G and fibre optic boom.

When you hear about another city deploying high speed internet, or someone bragging about their fibre connection, there’s an HDD rig somewhere that’s making that happen. Telecom companies are really getting serious about putting fibre optic cables underground. And you know what causes that? Drill pipe. A lot of them.

Second, cities are getting smart about how they’re building.

You’ve seen it – roads being ripped up, traffic nightmares, angry residents. It’s expensive, it’s slow and nobody likes it, traditional open-cut excavation. HDD allows pipelines and cables to be installed without disturbing everything above ground. Governments are encouraging trenchless methods as they are less disruptive and more environmentally friendly.

Third, we are replacing a lot of old infrastructure.

Particularly in North America. “We have a lot of underground pipelines and utilities that are ageing out and need to be replaced. In 2024, the U.S. alone represented about USD 1.9 billion of the HDD market. That’s a lot of drill rods in the system.

The Regional Story – Buyers by Product

North America still has the biggest slice of the pie, with around 34% of the global market in 2024. But here’s where it gets interesting.

The fastest-growing region is Asia-Pacific. The value of the HDD market in China was estimated at USD 893 million in 2025, and is projected to more than double to USD 2 billion by 2033. The Asia-Pacific region holds about 39% of the global HDD market share.

I‘ve been talking to more and more customers from South-east Asia. The urbanisation happening over there is insane. They’re all going HDD because they can build without shutting down entire cities.

Today Europe still accounts for about 20% of the market. They have very strict environmental rules that almost force contractors to use trenchless technology rather than conventional excavation.

The Tech That’s Transforming Our Work

Okay, I won’t geek out too much here. But there are some really cool innovations happening in this space.

Automation is finally becoming something real.

Vermeer added factory cab option for its D24 drill, the first in its class to offer one (early 2026). They also feature an Automated Rod Exchange system that allows for rod changes with just one command. Less work. Fewer injuries. Faster jobs. Win win win.

Electric rigs are coming.”

Goodeng Machinery unveiled a fully electric extra-large rig with 12,000 kN pullback force. Streicher has the HDD20-E, which it calls the world’s first fully electric rig of its class.

Why is that important to drill rods? Because electric rigs stress rods differently than diesel rigs. Different torque curves, different vibration signatures. The rods we’re going to be making five years from now may not be what we’re making today.”

What This Means for You (and Your Drill Rods)

Here’s my two cents worth.

The market is growing which means more competition but also more opportunities. If you are a contractor, you are going to be busier. Especially if you are in telecom, utilities or oil and gas.

But here’s the catch I keep telling my customers: with more work comes more wear on your equipment. Drill rods are the single most expensive consumable on an HDD rig. And when the market gets busy, it’s easy to try and push your rods longer and harder than you should.

I’ve seen that happen. A contractor lands a big job, they’re under pressure to finish fast, they run their rods past the recommended hours, and then — snap — they’re down for two days waiting on replacements. The downtime takes away from the money they save by not replacing rods on schedule 10x.

Don’t be that guy.

Conclusions (And a Little Prediction)

Look, I’m not a market researcher. I’m just a guy that thinks too much about drill rods and thread designs and steel alloys. But if I had to take a shot at where this market is going over the next 8 years?

There will be greater demand for higher quality rods that can withstand the tougher conditions that these bigger projects require. “We’re going to see more automation in the handling and maintenance of rods. And I bet we’ll see some new materials and designs that’ll make today’s rods look retro.

HDD drill rod demand is rising as the world builds more things underground without destroying what’s above. And as long as that is the case we will continue to make rods and you will continue to buy them.
